Gandhimathi, the elephant stays at Nellaiappar temple which is at Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. The elephant has got new sandals which costs Rs 12,000, with the help of devotees who come in the temple and the association.

The management of the temple gives special amenities for the 52-year-old elephant. Occasionally the elephant is transported to the annual rehabilitation camp to keep a check on the general well-being of the elephant.

She is taken for a walk regularly for a distance of five kilometres near the temple premises. However older elephants need to be careful while walking as they may step upon stones or sharp objects that could get inside their feet. Due to this reason the Hindu Traders Association and devotees gifted Gandhimathi swanky leather sandals which have been exclusively created for the elephant.
