Mexican wrestler icon and uncle to WWE superstar Rey Mysterio Jr and great-uncle to Dominik Mysterio, Rey Misterio Sr died aged 66 on Friday. Misterio who goes by the real name of Miguel Angel Lopez Dias was a Lucha Libre wrestler who starred in multiple Mexican promotions, including World Wrestling Association. Lucha Libre is Mexican professional wrestling, a form that is commonly associated with Mexico and is known for its colourfully masked performers and aerial moves.

Unknown facts from Lucha Libre wrestler Rey Misterio Sr's life

Rey Misterio Sr made his in-ring debut in January 1976. Throughout his career Misterio Sr wrestled for the likes of Pro Wrestling Revolution, Tijuana Wrestling and World Wrestling Association.

Misterio Sr gained fame in the lucha libre scene in Mexico, earning championship titles with prominent organisations such as the World Wrestling Association and Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, often regarded as Mexico's WWE equivalent.

He won the WWA World Junior Light Heavyweight Championship once and also earned the WWA Tag Team Championship with Rey Mysterio Jr. as well

Rey Misterio Sr has a son Miguel Aaron Lopez Hernandez who goes by the ring name of El Hijo de Rey Misterio (The Son of the Mystery King)

In 2012 Rey Misterio Sr's son was involved in the Drug Ice case. A kilogram of the drug "ice" was found in the possession of Lopez and his younger brother when they were arrested in Playas de Rosarito, Baja California. Both were turned over for prosecution to federal authorities. Although it was initially unclear whether Lopez had ever been found guilty of any crimes, he subsequently acknowledged in a 2023 interview that he had served four years in prison for his role in the drug trade.
