Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos experienced his first red card in Mexican football during a heated match on Sunday afternoon. Since joining Liga MX side Monterrey after leaving Sevilla, the veteran defender has had an impressive start, scoring three goals in just five games. However, his latest appearance against Pumas ended in controversy as he was sent off in the dying minutes of the game, which Monterrey won 3-1.
The drama began in the 20th minute when Ramos appeared to elbow an opponent, an incident that went unnoticed by the match referee. Later, in the closing moments of the game, the Spanish defender received his marching orders after a reckless foul on Pumas' Guillermo Martinez.
Ramos kicked the back of his opponent’s right leg in an off-the-ball incident, leaving the referee with no choice but to show him a red card. Following the match Ramos posted message on X in which he wrote, "Very important win away from home against a difficult team. Time to rest and prepare what’s next."
Ramos honors Real Madrid with his jersey number
Despite his controversial start in Mexico, Ramos continues to carry a special connection to Real Madrid. He chose to wear the No. 93 jersey at Monterrey as a tribute to his unforgettable stoppage-time goal in the 2014 Champions League final, which helped Madrid secure their historic La Décima (10th European title).
Ramos, who played 671 matches and scored 101 goals for Los Blancos, was renowned for his clutch performances in big moments. Upon his move to Monterrey, Real Madrid released a statement acknowledging his iconic legacy, saying: "Sergio Ramos will play for CF Monterrey. His shirt number chosen to remember a legendary moment for our club: minute 93."
