Pakistan is yet to announce their squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, as they are waiting for updates on Saim Ayub’s recovery. However, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi stated that they do not want to risk Saim’s career and will be ruling out from the champions trophy squad emphasizing that he is a valuable player for Pakistan. Naqvi added that he is in regular contact with the doctors and monitoring Saim’s progress closely.
“I am in touch with his doctors on a daily basis and his ankle plaster will come off in the next few days. But it will take time for his complete recovery and we are not going to risk his future career just for the Champions Trophy. He is our asset and we fully fit whatever time is required. I am personally monitoring his progress.”
Saim fractured his ankle during the second Test against South Africa earlier this month in Cape Town. Prior to his injury, he was in excellent form, scoring two ODI centuries against South Africa also recently he featured in the ICC ODI Team of the Year.
His ankle plaster is expected to come off soon, but his complete recovery will take time. Naqvi assured that the PCB will prioritize his long-term fitness.
Meanwhile, Fakhar Zaman, who scored a century in the 2017 Champions Trophy final against India, are likely to replace Saim in the squad. Additionally, Shan Masood and Imam-ul-Haq are being considered as potential replacements for Abdullah Shafique.
ICC Champions trophy 2025 details
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is scheduled to take place in Pakistan from February 19 to March 9. Due to security concerns, India will play all their matches in Dubai, including a highly anticipated clash against Pakistan on February 23.
The tournament will kick off with the opening match between Pakistan and New Zealand in Karachi. If India qualifies for the semifinals or final, those matches will also be held in Dubai. However, if India does not qualify, the final will be hosted in Lahore.
