Argentinian star footballer Lionel Messi scored an excellent free kick to script a historic win for Inter Miami over FC Porto in the Club World Cup fixture on Thursday at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. As a result, Inter Miami scripted a stunning comeback victory, significantly increasing their chances of advancing from the group stage.
Samu Aghehowa cashed in on the penalty opportunity only in the eighth minute of the match to get the Portuguese club's nose ahead in the contest. Nevertheless, Telasco Segovia, who netted a goal in the 47th minute, followed by Messi doing it seven minutes later helped Miami stage a stunning comeback to lead to victory. It marked the first win for any MLS side over any European opposition.

Despite Messi's presence, the stadium wasn't full by any means until the half-time due to a working day in the United States. However, the second half of the contest saw fans flock to the stadium. The 37-year-old forward had been acquired by Inter Miami in 2023.

Following the 2-1 win, the veteran footballer admitted that they knew the opposition was weaker and lauded their side for capitalising on it well. He told DAZN:
"It’s a huge joy, the whole team made a big effort, we worked really well. It’s a really important win for us and we have to enjoy it. You can see that we want to compete, and today we competed against a really good European team. We knew that today we were weaker, but we had our strengths."
