It was an emotional moment for D Gukesh and his family after the 18-year-old won the World Chess Championship beating Ding Lirenin the final. Gukesh and Liren contest was one for the ages as the game looked set to head into the tiebreak before a wrong move by Chinese Grandmaster gave Gukesh a historic win.
Congratulatory messages from Vishwanathan Anand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the entire world flooded social media. However, the most touching reaction came from Gukesh’s father, who was anxiously waiting outside the arena in Singapore while following the match on his mobile phone.
As soon as Gukesh’s victory became clear, his father Dr Rajinikanth who is an surgeon rushed towards the hall, overwhelmed with emotion. The moment Gukesh stepped out, he ran toward his father, and the two shared a heartfelt hug. It was undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and emotional moments of the day, as the young champion celebrated his groundbreaking achievement with his proud father by his side.

Gukesh's journey to the top hasn't been the easiest ride and has involved sacrifices not only from him but also his parents. Taking forward the incredible legacy of the great Viswanathan Anand, Gukesh became only the second Indian to clinch the coveted prize after the iconic player, who owned the crown five times in his career. I am happy that I realised the dream (and made it) into reality,"
He added, "I got a bit emotional because I was not expecting to win. "Every chess player wants to live this dream. I am living my dream,".
Gukesh, who won the 14th game against Liren after 58 moves in four hours, is the 18th world chess champion overall. If Thursday's game was also drawn, winner was to be decided in shorter duration tie-breaks on Friday.
