In the latest update regarding the coaching job of the Indian national football team, report emerged that Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez had sent in his application for the Job. However AIFF reportedly decided against it due to the high cost. The Blue Tigers are in need of new coach after Manolo Marquez resined from the position earlier this month.
Before Xavi, reports had emerged that former Liverpool stars Robbie Fowler and Harry Kewell have thrown their hats into the ring for the India national football team head coach position. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) recently closed applications for the top job, receiving 170 entries.
Xavi offers help to help Indian Football Team
According to The Times of India report, members of the All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) technical committee were stunned to find Xavi's name among the list of applicants.
AIFF team director Subrata Paul confirmed the news stating “The application was emailed to the AIFF. It’s correct that Xavi’s name was there,”
However the report also states that despite the high-profile interest, the AIFF reportedly did not pursue the possibility further, primarily due to the potential financial implications of hiring someone of Xavi’s stature.
Who are the front-runners for coaching position
Currently, former India head coach Stephen Constantine and Khalid Jamil, the first Indian coach to manage an Indian Super League side full-time are said to be front-runners for the job.
Xavi's managerial career highlights
Xavi began his managerial journey with Al-Sadd in Qatar, where he won seven trophies in less than 100 matches. He later returned to Barcelona as head coach and led the club through a difficult period, securing domestic titles and laying a foundation for future progress.
Xavi decided to step down from his role at the end of the ongoing 2023-2024 season. Barcelona were ninth in LaLiga when Xavi took over in 2021, guiding the team to a second-place finish and securing Champions League football. He then led Barça to a first LaLiga title since 2019 in his first full season in charge, as well as claiming the Supercopa with a brilliant performance in the final against Real Madrid.
