Eid al-Adha, is also known as the festival of sacrifice is celebrated on 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah. The festival is also called as Eid Qurban or Qurban Bayarami. It marks the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage. The festival will be celebrated on July 9 and 10 in India. Some call the festival as Bakra Eid or Bakrid.
Why is the festival celebrated?
Eid al-Adha is the second Islamic festival which follows post Eid al-Fitr. It marks the end of Ramadan, which is the holy month. Every year the date changes as it is based on the Islamic Lunar calendar that is 11 days shorter than the Western 365-day Gregorian calendar.
The festival is celebrated as a commemoration of Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice everything for the almighty. The similar story is seen in the Bible and Jews. One difference is that Muslims think that the son was Ishmael rather than Isaac as told in the Old Testament.
