In a shocking incident in Pune, a 35-year-old woman suffering from depression allegedly killed her two-month-old twin sons by dumping them into the overhead water tank of her residential building and then attempted suicide by jumping into it at Dattanagar in Theur, officials said on Thursday.

The incident took place on Tuesday, and the woman has been arrested on the charge of murdering her sons, they added.

According to the police, the woman stated that she took the drastic step because the twins were prematurely born, weighing just 2.25 kg each. She said their weight was not increasing despite medical treatment. Due to this, the woman was reportedly suffering from mental ailments and had gone into depression, the police added.

"On Tuesday, she dumped the twins in the overhead water tank and attempted to end her life by jumping into it. However, she survived because her brother pulled her out," they said.

The woman is in police custody until April 12.
