Pimpri-Chinchwad: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has ordered a safety audit of the under-construction flyover at Rakshak Chowk following concerns raised about its steep gradient. Officials said further action will be taken after the audit report is submitted, while construction work will continue in the meantime.

The flyover is being built on the busy Aundh–Ravet BRTS Road to ease heavy traffic congestion at Rakshak Chowk. The civic body had awarded the Rs 22.77 crore project to M/s T & T Infra Limited, with M/s Infaking Consulting Engineering Private Limited appointed as the project consultant. Around 75% of the payment has already been made, and the work has reached its final stage.

The issue came to light after Maval MP Shrirang Barne from Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena inspected the site on 26th February 2026. During the visit, he observed that the slope on both sides of the flyover appeared too steep. He warned that such a design could lead to accidents once the bridge becomes operational.

Barne pointed out that similar issues at the Madhukar Pawle Flyover have resulted in frequent accidents. He urged officials to correct the design and ensure safety measures are in place before opening the flyover to the public.

He also issued a strong warning that if accidents occur due to negligence, legal action, including charges of culpable homicide, could be filed against the responsible officials and consultants.

PCMC To Conduct Safety Audit

Following this, PCMC decided to conduct a detailed safety audit of the structure. The report is expected within the next few days. Civic officials said they are prepared to take corrective steps based on the findings.

Joint City Engineer Prerna Sinkar said that the work order has been approved by the College of Engineering Pune and is being carried out as per the guidelines of the Indian Roads Congress. However, she confirmed that a safety audit has been ordered as a precaution.

Officials said the construction will continue for now, and any required changes will be implemented after reviewing the audit report.
