The Nashik Municipal Corporation has decided to follow the trend of closing slaughterhouses on August 15 as seen coming from several municipal bodies in the state recently. A strict action will be taken if anyone is found violating the directions ordered by Commissioner Manisha Khatri.

The circular regarding this was issued by the Municipal Corporation's Veterinary Officer Dr Pramod Sonawane on Wednesday.

There are about one thousand meat and fish shops in Nashik city. And the decision comes following some organisations in the city demanding that meat sales be closed on Independence Day. The order to close slaughterhouses was issued by the Municipal Corporation as per the government rules of 1988.

As per the government instructions, slaughterhouses within the Nashik Municipal Corporation limits will remain completely closed on Friday, August 15, 2025, on the occasion of Independence Day. Also, no animal should be slaughtered on this day. It has been warned that legal action will be taken against the concerned persons if this rule is violated.

In addition to Nashik, several municipal bodies in the state including Jalgaon, Kolhapur, Ichalkaranji, Kalyan-Dombivli, and Nagpur, have issued closure of slaughter houses on Wednesday sparking a debate on the liberty over food choices.

Responding to the controversy, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis responded that, “The state never took such closure decisions. We have many other issues to address. Such orders are issued by the Municipal corporations that follow a government resolution from 1988.

“The state government has no interest in knowing who eats what,” Fadnavis added.
