In good news for Punekars, the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune has been notified as an Institution Deemed to be University under the distinct category by the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
Along with FTII, Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), Kolkata has also been granted the same status.
The Ministry of Education has announced that both institutes have been granted status under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, following the recommendation of the University Grants Commission (UGC). This recognition enables the institutions to offer doctoral, research, and innovative academic programmes while ensuring full compliance with UGC regulations and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 guidelines.
The institutes will also participate in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and integrate with the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), reinforcing academic mobility and transparency. The Ministry stated that this landmark decision, aligned with the vision of NEP 2020, will promote greater institutional autonomy, encourage innovation, and elevate standards of excellence in film and media education across the country.
Located on Law College Road in Pune, FTII offers courses in film direction, cinematography, acting, editing, sound design, and screenwriting. Its illustrious alumni include Rajkumar Hirani, Shabana Azmi, Om Puri, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and Naseeruddin Shah, among many others.
How to take admission to FTII?
The Joint Entrance Test (JET), which is conducted nationally, and the ensuing rounds of orientation and interview comprise the admissions process. Students are chosen based on their performance in the orientation and interviews, as well as their JET ratings.
The list of applicants shortlisted for the next round of selection will be posted on the Institute's website based on their JET performance. The shortlisted candidates will receive interview letters directly from the institute.
