A guru is absolutely necessary for every aspirant on the spiritual path. Some aspirants practise independently for a few years. They come across obstacles on the way and do not know how to proceed further. Then they begin to search for a guru. This happens particularly in yogic practice.
Learn yoga under a guru. Only then will you be able to understand the subtle points and grow rapidly. The guru will remove your doubts and show you the right path, because he has already trodden the path himself. He will point out the pitfalls and snares that tempt aspirants on the path. He will inspire you.
On the spiritual path it is difficult to find your way. The mind will mislead you very often. One who serves the guru knows the way. You cannot have understanding and light without the grace of the guru. Sit at the lotus feet of he guru. That is the safest refuge.
