Palghar, Maharashtra: Wockhardt Hospital in Mira Road has sounded an alarm over the persistent and widespread use of tobacco in the community. The hospital is urgently calling for science-driven action to combat this addiction.

A recent survey conducted by the hospital reveals that despite growing awareness of the health risks, many users continue to struggle with quitting tobacco, often returning to the habit due to strong withdrawal symptoms and psychological dependence.

The survey, which included over 1,000 respondents, found that a significant number were regular tobacco users, with many also consuming alcohol, compounding the health risks.

According to Dr. Tirathram Kaushik, Consultant Oncosurgeon at Wockhardt Hospitals, the combination acts as a double-edged sword, sharply increasing the risk of oral, throat, and esophageal cancers.

“People are not unaware, they want to quit,” said Dr. Kaushik. “But addiction is a chronic condition. Without structured support, medical therapies, and mental health interventions, relapse is almost inevitable.”

The data paints a troubling picture - while many participants were aware of the dangers of tobacco and had made attempts to quit, the success rate was low. In one segment, 117 said they had tried to quit, while 149 reported relapsing.

Dr. Kaushik emphasized that addressing tobacco addiction involves more than just individual determination. He described nicotine as a highly potent and addictive substance, stressing the need to treat it like any other serious medical dependency.

According to him, a comprehensive approach involving pharmacological therapies, psychological counseling, and community-based support programs is essential. He also pointed out that stress, anxiety, and peer pressure are key factors contributing to continued tobacco use among individuals.

Wockhardt Hospitals is now urging local authorities, schools, and public health bodies to collaborate on sustained anti-tobacco initiatives. These should include better access to nicotine replacement therapies, integration of cessation programs in primary care, and the use of digital platforms to engage youth.

“We’ve had enough of token gestures. Now is the time for science-backed, compassionate intervention,” Dr. Kaushik said. “Every individual who quits tobacco is not just a statistic, it’s a life saved.”
