Mumbai, August 21, 2026: The railway magistrate court at Central Matunga on Friday remanded the accused, Amajad Safriddin Shaikh, 48, in police custody until August 27 in connection with the death of a passenger who was allegedly pushed from a moving local train. The deceased’s family has sought justice. His funeral will be held on Saturday.
The investigation revealed that the deceased, 62-year-old Cajetan Denis Peris, used to do odd jobs, including working at a paan stall, and was not a pavement dweller. He was also known as Paul.
Argument Turns Into Scuffle
Shahaji Nikam, senior police inspector of the Bandra Government Railway Police (GRP) station, said, “We recorded the statement of an eyewitness. The accused boarded the local train at Lower Parel station at 1.07 pm, while the deceased boarded at Mahim. After boarding the train, the deceased asked the accused why he was occupying the seat, as the compartment was reserved for persons with disabilities. An argument then broke out between them. The argument escalated into a scuffle, during which they grabbed each other’s shirts. The incident occurred near the door. During the scuffle, the accused allegedly pushed the deceased out of the moving train.”
The deceased’s younger sister, Maria, said, “He was a determined person. He lost his left leg from the knee several years ago after suffering from gangrene, following which his leg had to be amputated. Despite this, he remained determined and did whatever he wanted to do. He wanted to undergo surgery on his leg, but he passed away before the surgery. He should have died peacefully, not in such a manner. I feel terrible that I could not arrange his surgery. It is very painful for me.”
She further alleged that the accused deliberately pushed her brother towards the creek. “He wanted to push him into the creek. I do not know whether he had done anything similar to others at that spot in the past,” she said. Peris was one of seven siblings.
Family Demands Strict Punishment
Peris’s niece, Ria, said, “He was very loving. He loved me and my brother like his own children. He would wait for us when we returned home. He did not use a prosthetic leg as it caused him pain in his thigh. He used a walking stick instead. When my mother received a call from the police informing her that my uncle was unconscious and had sustained serious head injuries, I realised that something was seriously wrong.”
“We want justice. We know that even if the accused remains in jail, my uncle cannot return. However, if he is released, his confidence may increase, and he could do the same thing to someone else. We want him to remain in jail and face strict punishment,” she added.
During the investigation, the accused allegedly told the police that he was an orphan and had mental health problems. However, Peris’s relatives said they did not believe the claim and alleged that he was trying to gain sympathy.
