Mumbai: In a bizarre incident, a Vashi-bound 9.06 pm local train was detained for 23 minutes at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on Tuesday night after a stray dog was spotted running on train roof. The incident occurred at 9:05 pm, just as the train was preparing to depart from platform number two.

According to eyewitnesses, the dog was noticed atop the train at the last moment. Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel attempted to shoo it away, but the animal, visibly confused and scared, ran toward the other end of the train. In a desperate bid to escape, it inadvertently came in contact with the overhead electric wires and was electrocuted.

“The dog was first seen on the roof when the train was about to leave . GRP and RPF officers tried to remove it, but it panicked and started running. Unfortunately, it got electrocuted when it touched the overhead wires,” a railway official said.

Sources indicate that the dog may have climbed onto the train from a foot overbridge at the Vashi end of CSMT. CCTV footage is being reviewed to determine exactly how the incident occurred.

Following the electrocution, the power supply to the train was shut down to facilitate the removal of the dog's body, leading to a 23-minute delay in train services.

"Commuters started gathering to see the dog and take pictures, further confusing the animal. Half the commuters sitting in the packed train on platform number 2 switched to the train on platform number 1 to watch and click pictures and videos of the incident", said an eyewitness.
