Nearly three decades after the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, a special TADA court last week ordered the release of 14 properties belonging to Ibrahim Abdul Razak Memon alias Tiger Memon and his family to the Central government. The government would now be at liberty to realise these properties.

The special TADA court last week allowed a plea filed by the competent authority under the Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators (Forfeiture of Property) Act, 1976, seeking the release of the properties owned by the family, as the properties still lay with the court receiver.

The 14 properties include a flat in a building in Bandra (West), office premises in Mahim, an open plot at Mahim, a vacant plot and a flat in Santacruz (East), two flats in a building in Kurla, an office at Mohammed Ali Road, a shop and plot in Dongri, three shops in Manish Market, and a building on Sheikh Memon Street, Mumbai.

The plea was moved after the Al Husseini Co-operative Housing Society approached the court for relief regarding the three flats owned by the Memon family in the said building, which were attached by the court.

The TADA court had, in August last year, ordered the release of the three flats to the competent authority, which gave the society a green signal for the redevelopment of the said building. After this, the records were checked and verified again, wherein it was noticed that the 14 properties, though confiscated, remained with the court receiver since September 1993.

The competent authority again moved a plea seeking the release of 14 properties, which was allowed last week.
