Thane: A major mishap was averted in the Majiwada area of Thane West on Thursday afternoon after a portion of a ceiling slab collapsed in a residential building. The incident occurred around 3:55 PM at the Velankanni Building, a 35-year-old structure located near Fatima Church.
According to the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) Disaster Management Cell, the slab of Room No. 103 on the first floor gave way. Ms. Kirti Kavilkar (75) sustained minor injuries and blunt trauma in the incident.
Assistant Commissioner Sonal Kale, along with engineers from the Public Works Department, Fire Brigade personnel, and the Encroachment Department, rushed to the site to coordinate emergency operations.

The building, categorized under the C2A (Dangerous) classification, has been completely vacated for safety reasons. Officials confirmed that the structure houses 12 flats with approximately 45 residents. While some residents have made private arrangements, 15 people have been shifted to a temporary shelter at TMC School No. 47 in Majiwada.

The building has been sealed due to its precarious condition. Further structural assessments and demolition proceedings will be conducted by the Majiwada Ward Committee and the TMC Construction Department.
