Thane: Public safety concerns have flared up in Thane following a shocking incident on the Kopri Bridge, where a heavy construction reinforcement cage unexpectedly toppled from an under-structure and crashed directly onto a moving car.

The harrowing incident took place at the active Anand Nagar–Saket Elevated Road project site. As the vehicle navigated the Kopri Bridge, the massive iron rods and structure came crashing down, piercing the car and severely smashing its front windshield. The accident has sent shockwaves through local commuters, highlighting glaring safety oversights in high-density urban infrastructure zones.
Despite the alarming nature of the crash and the extensive damage to the vehicle, authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported.
MMRDA Takes Strict Action, Imposes ₹2 Crore Fine
Taking immediate cognizance of the grave negligence, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) asserted a zero-tolerance stance towards safety lapses. Expressing extreme displeasure over the incident, MMRDA has slapped a heavy penalty of Rs 2 crore on the project contractor responsible for the execution.
"Such incidents are unacceptable, and any lapse in construction safety will not be tolerated. Public safety remains MMRDA’s highest priority, and strict accountability will be ensured at every project site," an official statement noted.
Site Clearance and Ongoing Investigation
Following the disruption, emergency response teams swiftly moved in. The heavily damaged vehicle was towed away, and the toppled reinforcement cage was safely cleared from the carriageway using a crane to restore normal traffic flow.
Meanwhile, MMRDA has ordered a thorough, detailed investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the structural failure and identify individual or systemic safety lapses. The authority has mandated that strict corrective measures be aggressively enforced across the site to ensure that negligence of this scale does not endanger motorists again.
