Thane: 17-year-old boy from Digha found drowned in a well at Kalwa

Thane: A 17-year-old boy from Digha in Navi Mumbai lost his life after drowning in well at Kargil Hill in Kalwa (East). The RDMC team along with fire brigade personnel, police officials of Kalwa and disaster management cell swimmers after three hours of effort successfully pulled out his body from well at around 10:30 am on Saturday, July 9 informed RDMC officials.

Avinash Sawant, Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) chief said, "On Friday, July 8 at around 7:16pm we received a call in the disaster management cell room regarding a boy drowning in a well next to Sant Nirankari Bhavan at Thakur Pada in Waghoba Nagar at Kalwa (East) on Kargil Hill.

"A 17-year-old boy Sumit Manoj Mali resident of Room No. 746 near Hanuman Temple at Vishnu Nagar in Digha, Navi Mumbai had gone for swimming in a well along with his six friends. The depth of the well is approximately 30 to 35 feet deep and the depth of the well and water was not known by the boy so after jumping in it he was drowned in the well.

"Soon after receiving the information Kalwa police personnel, assistant commissioner (Kalwa Ward Committee), regional disaster management cell officers and staff, Thane disaster response force personnel, disaster management cell swimmers and Thane fire brigade personnel along with one rescue vehicle reached the spot.

"The well is located on a hill at a height of about 700 to 800 meters. Due to the narrow road and insufficient light at night it was impossible to reach the spot and the reason the search operation was called off with the permission of police and family members."

Sawant further added, " On Saturday, July 9 the search operation was resumed at around 7:30 am in the presence of assistant commissioner of Kalwa ward committee), Kalwa ward staff, disaster management cell staff along with one pick-up vehicle, one ambulance and one bike ambulance, Thane disaster response force with one mini bus vehicle, Thane fire brigade with one jeep vehicle and Navi Mumbai fire brigade personnel along with one emergency vehicle were present at the spot for search operation.

"After a 3-hour effort the boy's body was pulled out of the well at around 10:30 am and it took about 50 minutes to bring the body down from the hill.The body of Sumit Manoj Mali (17) has been handed over to the Kalwa police personnel."
