Mumbai: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar has been elected as the National President of the National Congress Party (NCP) on Thursday, February 26. The announcement was made by senior party leader Praful Patel during the party’s National Executive Meeting held at Mumbai's Worli Dome. Her appointment as the NCP president came after her late husband, Ajit Pawar, died in a plane crash in Baramati on January 28.

In an emotional address to the NCP party workers, Sunetra Pawar said, "I accept this responsibility with humility and determination. Together we will strengthen our organisation and work tirelessly for the welfare of the people."

At the national executive meeting, several key leaders, including Sunil Tatkare, Dhananjay Munde, along with ministers and senior office-bearers, were in attendance.

After her husband's death, Sunetra was sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister on January 31, becoming the first woman to hold the office in the state's history. Before her swearing-in, she was unanimously elected as the leader of the NCP Legislative Party following the sudden leadership vacuum in the party.

In addition to her party leadership responsibilities, Sunetra Pawar serves in the Maharashtra Cabinet under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, holding key portfolios including State Excise, Sports and Youth Welfare, and Minority Development and Waqf.

For decades, Sunetra was primarily known as a stabilising force behind Ajit Pawar. While he handled the high-intensity world of Maharashtra politics, she focused on social work in Baramati, managing the Vidya Pratishthan educational institutions and supporting environmental initiatives such as the Environmental Forum of India.
