Mumbai: The Sheena Bora murder case seems to be a never-ending puzzle wherein the police officials and the medical authorities have two different voices, contradicting their own statements. The police sources on Monday stated that the skull retrieved from Raigad forest will be sent to JJ Hospital for facial reconstruction to determine Sheena Bora’s identity. However, the dean of the hospital denied stating that they have not got any such directives from the police for facial reconstruction.
Dr Tatyarao Lahane, the dean of JJ Hospital, said, “We are not aware about this as we have not got any instructions on facial reconstruction from the police. Also, we had handed over all the burnt bones and teeth to Khar police on Friday, following which we are not left with anything at the moment. If we get directives from the police, then we will start with it but until then we have to wait.” Forensic facial reconstruction is the process of recreating the face of an individual from their skeletal remains through an amalgamation of artistry, forensic science, anthropology, osteology and anatomy.
Shedding more light on the issue, Dr Rajat Kapoor, the associate professor of surgery at JJ Hospital, said, “Facial reconstruction is possible without the presence of tissues. However, we are not sure about its success. We do not know whether the facial reconstruction will be accurate and successful as it all depends on the condition of the bones and skull.” Meanwhile, the blood and hair samples of Indrani Mukerjea and Mikhail Bora have also been collected and sent to the Kalina forensic laboratory and the report is expected in the next couple of days.
