Palghar, August 24, 2026: A seven-year-old student of the government-aided Ashram School at Maswan in Palghar district died after his health suddenly deteriorated, while 19 other students at the school have developed fever symptoms and are under medical observation. The incident has raised concerns over the health of students residing at the institution.
Student Develops Fever
The deceased student has been identified as Kumar Shreyansh Shailesh Ambat, a Class 1 student. According to officials, he had developed fever on August 22 and was taken to the Maswan Primary Health Centre (PHC) for treatment.
On August 24, Shreyansh’s condition deteriorated and he developed breathing difficulties. As his oxygen levels were low, the Medical Officer at the Maswan PHC advised that he be shifted to the Rural Hospital at Manor by ambulance. He was provided oxygen support during the transfer. At Manor, the medical officer conducted an ECG and declared him dead.
The exact cause of death has not yet been established. Authorities said the cause will be determined after the post-mortem examination report is received.
Health Assessment Of Students
The incident has prompted an immediate health assessment of students at the Ashram School. The Maswan Ashram School has a total of 449 students, 222 boys and 227 girls, of whom 395 are residential students.
Following information about the incident, the Project Officer, District Health Officer and Taluka Health Officer visited the school and issued necessary directions regarding measures to safeguard the health of the students.
A team from the Taluka Ashram School Department subsequently conducted a comprehensive health examination of the students. Those found to have symptoms such as cold, fever and cough were taken for medical examination as a precautionary measure.
Such students have been kept under observation at the Maswan PHC following the advice of the medical examination team. Their condition has been reported as stable.
Samples Collected For Testing
Earlier, health officials had also examined students who developed fever, cold and cough symptoms. Blood samples were collected for testing for dengue, malaria and other infectious diseases. Further laboratory reports are awaited.

The health department has initiated preventive measures at the school and is closely monitoring the health of the residential students. Authorities said further action will be taken based on medical reports and the findings of the post-mortem examination.
