Palghar, August 24, 2026: A 19-year-old female student allegedly died by suicide at the hostel of an agricultural college in Asangaon in Dahanu taluka on Monday morning, triggering shock and concern among students and staff.
The deceased is a resident of Jawhar taluka. She was pursuing the second year of a diploma in agricultural education at VM Patil Krushi Pratishthan, an agricultural college in Asangaon, and was staying at the institution’s hostel.
According to preliminary information, the girl had reportedly been under mental stress for the past few days. However, the exact reason behind her death has not yet been established.
Inquiry Into Circumstances
Students and relatives have called for a detailed inquiry into the circumstances that may have led to her alleged suicide, including whether she was facing any pressure or had been in contact with anyone shortly before the incident.
The incident has also once again raised concerns over the mental well-being of tribal students living away from their families for education. The issue of student suicides in hostels has come under discussion following the incident.
Members of the Adivasi Ekta Parishad have demanded a thorough investigation into whether the girl was under any form of pressure, what led to her reported mental distress and whom she had contacted before the incident.
Police Begin Investigation
The incident came to light on Monday morning, following which personnel from Vangaon Police Station reached the spot. Police conducted a panchnama and have begun an investigation. Information is expected to be collected from her fellow students, teachers and family members.

The investigation is being conducted under the guidance of Vangaon Police Station Inspector Tushar Pachpute. Police have not yet established the precise reason behind the death, and further details are awaited.
