Navi Mumbai, August 21, 2026: Rabale police have registered a case against a tower crane operator, site engineer and the management of two companies after two workers were crushed to death by heavy steel rods at a construction site in Airoli on August 17.

Police said the preliminary investigation revealed that mandatory safety measures, including keeping workers away from the potential fall zone and creating a barricaded exclusion zone, had allegedly not been followed during the crane operation.

The case has been registered against crane operator Keshav Kamlesh Nishad (34), site engineer/supervisor Rupesh Prakash Shirsath (34), and the concerned management and responsible officials of M/s VRB LLP and M/s Gigaplex Estate Pvt. Ltd. under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 304(A) of the Indian Penal Code.

Accident At Airoli Construction Site

The accident occurred on the afternoon of August 17 at the Raheja building construction site in the Mindspace area on Patni Road, Airoli. Heavy iron steel rods were being lifted using a tower crane when its lifting mechanism, including the wire rope/assembly, suddenly failed. The rods fell on workers below, killing Bobby Roy (41) and Rahul Mishra (33) on the spot.

Roy was originally from Bihar, while Mishra was a resident of Uttar Pradesh. Both workers were staying at the labour camp at the construction site.

Police Probe Reveals Safety Lapses

Rabale police had initially registered an accidental death case and launched an investigation. During the probe, police found that workers had not been shifted to a safe distance from the fall zone while the heavy material was being lifted. The area around the crane's operating zone also allegedly lacked the required barricading and exclusion zone.

"Prima facie, the investigation has revealed lapses in safety measures during the crane operation. Workers were not kept away from the potential fall zone and the necessary exclusion area was not maintained. We are investigating the responsibility of the crane operator, site supervisors and the management," said a police officer.

Police are examining CCTV footage, the technical condition of the crane and the safety measures implemented at the construction site. The investigation is also aimed at determining the specific responsibility of the individuals and companies named in the case.
