In order to ensure that citizens who recovered from the COVID 19 infection and do not have any symptoms of mucormycosis, the civic body has reached 9000 people in the last fortnight. The dedicated call center of NMMC has contacted around 9,000 such patients who recovered from COVID infection after April 1.
Of the 9000 recovered patients, a total of 950 citizens are found diabetic, and they are at risk of mucormycosis infection. Now, the civic body is calling them every day to enquire about their condition. The civic will be in constant touch with them for the next six to eight weeks to check any symptoms of black fungus or mucormycosis.
At present, there are 19 patients with mucormycosis are being treated in the city. Of the 19 patients, 9 patients are from the NMMC area and the remaining are from other cities.
Meanwhile, the civic body has also suggested that the patient should be checked regularly to see if his / her diabetes is under control while undergoing treatment and that such patients should be given a leaflet informing them about the symptoms of mucormycosis for the next 6 to 8 weeks of discharge.
In order to create awareness, the civic body has also erected large hoardings all over the city, as well as reaching to citizens on social media about mucormycosis infarction. Civic chief Abhijit Bangar had appealed to the expert doctors of the task force to co-produce video clips to disseminate information about mucormycosis to the public.
Bangar has also clarified that there is a concern in the minds of the citizens about the availability of medicines for mucormycosis as well as the cost as it is expensive. The NMMC is concerned about how to make the medicine available to the patients in the city as a priority and those who cannot afford it will be provided free medicine.
