Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has introduced strict penalties to prevent damage to trees within its jurisdiction. Individuals, institutions, and businesses found nailing advertisements onto trees or installing electrical lighting will now face a ₹10,000 fine per tree.

The decision was made under Resolution No. 7461, passed on January 27, 2025, by the NMMC Tree Authority. "The move comes in response to increasing instances of trees being harmed due to illegal advertising boards, banners, and decorative lighting, which weaken tree structures and negatively impact their growth," said an official.

The enforcement of these penalties will be carried out by the Assistant Commissioner and Tree Officer, ensuring that violators are held accountable.

According to NMMC, such activities pose a serious environmental threat, leading to long-term damage to the city's green cover. " The corporation has taken a firm stand to curb these harmful practices, stressing that the preservation of trees is crucial for maintaining ecological balance and urban sustainability," adds the official

Officials have urged citizens, business owners, and organizations to comply with the regulations and avoid any actions that could harm trees. The civic body has also called for public cooperation in reporting violations to help enforce the new rule effectively.

With these penalties in place, NMMC aims to deter further environmental damage and ensure the protection of Navi Mumbai’s tree cover. Citizens are advised to follow the guidelines, as failure to do so will result in strict action and hefty fines.
