Navi Mumbai: The body of a newborn boy was found behind a private company at Digha in Airoli on Tuesday. A security official from that company had first spotted a plastic bag lying in a deserted area. Upon inspecting the bag, he found the body of the newborn inside. He later informed the police.

Nitin Gite, senior inspector of Rabale MIDC police station said, “We took the body into our custody and have sent it to the NMMC hospital at Vashi.”

The age of the newborn could not be ascertained, and are yet to receive medical reports from the hospital, Gite said. “We cannot say exactly how old was the baby and what was his cause of death as of now,” said Gite.

Now, the police are examining the CCTV footage of the nearby areas. “We are also checking hospitals to get details of the newborn babies and also examining the CCTV footage of that area to get clues,” said the official.

Meanwhile, the police have registered a case under section 318 (concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead body) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against unidentified parents of the baby. “We hope to make a breakthrough in this case soon,” he said.
