Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray will lead the ‘Mumbai Maidan Bachao Tiranga Andolan’ in Mumbai on Sunday, August 23, at 5 pm at the Neville D’Souza Football Turf in Bandra West.

Thackeray, in a post on X, called for the protest against the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Maharashtra government, accusing them of taking away Mumbai’s open spaces and allowing them to be used for commercial development.

Thackeray urges citizens to join

Urging citizens to join the protest, Thackeray alleged that the government and civic authorities were “snatching away” open spaces, sports complexes and playgrounds and handing them over to their “favoured builders and contractors”.

In his post, Thackeray wrote, “Join us against the State regime and the @mybmc snatching away open spaces, sports complexes, playgrounds to hand it over to their favoured builders and contractors.”

He also appealed to those attending the protest to not carry any political party flags, but instead bring the Tricolour. He further called for “red cards” against what he described as the “land loot of Mumbai” by the BJP.

Open spaces allegedly being targeted

Thackeray specifically alleged that open spaces in Bandra West, Juhu, Andheri and Mulund were being targeted by the BJP-led government. He claimed that elected representatives were supporting proposals to hand over open spaces to builders and contractors.

He further wrote that MLAs who prioritise “deals with builders and contractors” over the future of the city would defend what he described as the BJP’s “land loot”, while those concerned about Mumbai’s open spaces, playgrounds, environment and future would oppose such moves through the BMC and MHADA.

Convention centre proposal faces opposition

Meanwhile, the protest call comes days after the BMC approved a proposal to develop a convention centre at the Neville D’Souza Football Ground in Bandra West, which would involve changing the existing use of the football ground.

The proposed redevelopment has faced opposition from sections of the football community and local residents, who have raised concerns over the loss of one of the city’s dedicated football spaces.
