Mumbai: A major leak was detected on the Tansa water pipeline in Powai early on Tuesday morning. As a result, water supply has been suspended in certain areas of the city to carry out the repair work.

This has affected the water supply in S -Bhandup, K East - Jogeshwari and Andheri East, G North - Dadar, Mahim, Dharavi, and H East -parts of Santacruz, Khar, Bandra East. The water supply is expected to normalise by Wednesday.

A leak was detected on the 1,450 mm diameter Tansa water pipeline near the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) bridge in Powai on Tuesday. As a result, the water supply from the Tansa pipeline was immediately suspended, and the BMC's hydraulic engineering department initiated emergency repair work.

Several lakh litres of water were lost due to the leakage. The disruption in water supply affected residents across four civic wards, with the sudden suspension catching many off guard. In nearby areas of Powai, water even flooded into houses, particularly in chawls.

Chandrashekhar Waigankar, a former corporator, expressed concern over the sudden water cut, saying, "Due to this unexpected water suspension, we had to arrange water tankers in the affected areas wherever it was demanded. This was done so that people could at least access drinking water and manage their daily household chores."

A civic official said, "Valves were immediately closed to prevent further wastage and repair work is underway on war footing. However, the repair work will take at least 24 hours to complete."

The repair work includes isolating the main water pipeline from Powai to Maroshi. This process will impact the water supply in the K East Ward, S Ward, G North Ward, and H East Ward. The civic body has appealed to use the water judiciously during this period.
