Mumbai: Minister for Fisheries and Ports Nitesh Rane has directed officials to expedite the Water Metro project in Mumbai, a crucial initiative to provide an alternative transportation system in the city. Rane instructed that the development plan for the Water Metro should be submitted within three months.
The Kochi Metro Rail Limited company was tasked with conducting a feasibility study for the project, and their report was presented to Minister Rane at Mantralaya today. Rane emphasized the potential of water transportation in Mumbai, particularly in areas like Bandra, Worli, Versova, South Mumbai, and Navi Mumbai.
The minister suggested that the routes for the Water Metro should be chosen based on passenger traffic and profitability. He also directed that ticket prices should be affordable for the common man. Rane highlighted the potential of the Water Metro to connect North Mumbai and Navi Mumbai to South Mumbai, reducing travel time for commuters.
According to the report, the Water Metro project will involve setting up 29 terminals and 10 routes, with an estimated cost of Rs 2,500 crore. The project will also include facilities for passengers, boat procurement, and other amenities. Minister Rane's efforts to expedite the project are expected to benefit Mumbai's residents, providing a faster and more efficient transportation system.
