Mumbai: A recent incident throwing light on injustice over a teenager by the Mumbai police has come forward from Vithalwadi Police station in Ulhasnagar. A 19-year-old boy, Arvind Jaiswal, was assaulted by four men in Ulhasnagar on Friday night, but the Vithalwadi police filed an FIR 28 hours later after a video of the attack circulated widely, alleged activist Satyajit Burman.

The activist also mentioned that the police delayed in reaching at the location of the incident which was minuted away from the police station causing delay in investigating the assault case.

According to activist Satyajit Burman, the ambulance reached the scene in minutes, but it took the police over an hour to travel the five-minute distance. The following day, as no FIR was lodged, he posted a video of the attack. The police filed a case of assault against the four suspects.

Senior inspector Anil Padwal from Vithalwadi police stated, "The complainant went home after taking medical treatment, due to which there was a delay in filing the case,"according to a report by Times Of India.

Another Incident

The alarming event in 2024 that captivated the country involved a nursery child who was sexually assaulted in Thane, as the child's parents encountered the same problem when police took 11 hours to file an FIR after the formal complaint was lodged.

What Can You Do If Police Delays To File FIR?

If the Mumbai police are delaying the filing of an FIR, you can contact a senior officer at the station, submit a written complaint to the local magistrate, file an online FIR yourself, or contact the State Human Rights Commission if the delay is excessive; also, keep a record of all communications with the police and seek legal counsel if needed.
