Mumbai, April 2: The Mumbai Traffic Police have launched a special enforcement drive against the illegal use of dome lights (flashing beacons) on private and unauthorised vehicles across the city.
Complaints over misuse of flashing lights
In recent times, the traffic police have received multiple complaints about private vehicle owners and unauthorised individuals installing red, blue, or yellow flashing dome lights on their vehicles. Such lights are typically reserved for emergency and authorised government vehicles.
Officials stated that misuse of these lights allows offenders to falsely pose as VIPs, bypass traffic congestion unlawfully, and create confusion among the public as well as on-duty police personnel.
Citywide enforcement drive conducted
Taking serious note of the issue, the Mumbai Traffic Police conducted a citywide special drive on April 1 and April 2, 2026, targeting vehicles fitted with illegal dome lights.
During the drive, teams led by Assistant Commissioners of Police from the South Central Region, Marine Drive Traffic Division, and Bandra Traffic Division inspected several vehicles.
As part of the action, authorities seized illegal dome lights of various colours from 80 vehicles and also confiscated three sirens. Strict penal action has been taken against the vehicle owners and drivers under the Motor Vehicles Act.
Strict action and penalties warned
The police have warned that strict action will continue against violators. If any private or unauthorised vehicle is found using such dome lights or sirens, maximum penalties will be imposed under the law.
In serious cases, the vehicle’s registration may be recommended for cancellation to the Regional Transport Office (RTO), and criminal charges may also be filed.
