A sudden increase in the number of break-ins and thefts at shops and garages in the western suburbs led to the formation of a special team by the Khar police, which arrested three men who committed the crime to finance their narcotic needs. The accused trio has broken into hotels and clinics as well. They have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

According to the police, after a series of break-ins were reported in the area, a special team checked all the CCTV footage of the crime spots, which led them to one of the accused Dheerajkumar Kashyap, a history sheeter and a resident of Nalasopara, who was apprehended. During the investigation, Kashyap spilled the beans on two of his accomplices, Santosh Bhoir alias Khajwa and Abdul Ansari, both residents of Nalasopara.

Acting on this information, the police formed teams and nabbed the other two from the vicinity. Primary investigation revealed that the trio used to consume drugs and liquor and committed the thefts and break-ins to fulfill their narcotic needs. The trio had earlier broken into medical shops, clinics, garages and hotels, and decamped with valuables like laptops, tabs, music systems and other gadgets. The trio would sell off these valuables to another party in exchange for money.

The trio has been booked for break-in and trespassing charges, said officials. Kashyap and Bhoir are both record criminals and have been wanted for a series of house break-ins across the city. Further investigation is underway, the police said.
