Mumbai rains: Orange alert issued in city for five days; heavy deluge expected

There is a forecast of torrential rains in Mumbai, Thane and surrounding areas, with active monsoon conditions prevailing over the west coast this week

The IMD has issued an orange alert -- very heavy rainfall is projected at isolated places -- over Mumbai, Thane and Pune in the next few days, possibly till Saturday (July 9).

On Tuesday, in Mumbai, there was between 140 mm and 150 mm of rainfall, which is categorised as heavy. A warning of extremely heavy rainfall (more than 200 mm) has been given for the city and Thane in the coming days.

There will also be occasional gusty winds reaching up to 40-50 to 60 kmph along the coast, which may result in damage to vulnerable/temporary structures; landslide/mudslides and rock falls may occur in vulnerable areas; the seas will be rough along the coast.

On Tuesday, the minimum temperature recorded in Santacruz observatory was 25.0 °C and the maximum 30.7 °C; the relative humidity was 97%. Colaba experienced minimum temperature of 25.0 °C and maximum of 30.9 °C with relative humidity of 93%.
