Mumbai: The city was lashed by heavy rains on Monday, resulting in a few incidents of house collapses and tree falls, with some short circuit incidents also being reported. Fortunately, no casualties were reported on account of these mishaps. Meanwhile, the civic administration plans to install additional de-watering pumps in areas like Hindmata, Gandhi Market and the Andheri subway to tackle any flooding that may arise on account of the downpour.

Five incidents of house collapse and short circuit were reported, while 14 trees fell in the city throughout the day. According to the Indian Meterological department (IMD), the Colaba observatory recorded 12.8 mm rainfall while 21 mm was recorded at Santa Cruz in the 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Monday. By 6 pm, the city recorded 21 mm of rainfall, with the Eastern and Western suburbs receiving 17 mm and 25 mm, respectively.

The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rains for Mumbai from Wednesday to Friday. Last Thursday, waterlogging was reported in some chronic spots. Hindmata and Gandhi Market have underground water holding tanks, but these parts were flooded last week due to heavy rains. “Despite waterlogging in these areas, once the rain eased the water was able to recede quickly,” said a civic official.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Response Force has deployed teams across the state in anticipation of the rains in the days to come.

"In consultation with local administrations, five NDRF teams have been deployed in Mumbai and one team each in Nagpur, Chiplun in Ratnagiri and Mahad in Raigad," an NDRF officer said.
