An undertrial in a narcotics case, Imran Khan, evades armed escorts and threatens MNS Kamgar Sena VP Amit Matkar in broad daylight.Mumbai: A serious lapse in police escort duty has put the Mumbai Police under scrutiny after an undertrial accused in a drug case not only escaped police supervision but also managed to reach the office of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s Kamgar Sena Vice President, Amit Matkar, and allegedly threatened him.
According to police sources, the incident occurred on May 16, 2025, and was formally reported to the Agripada Police Station on May 21 by Matkar, who also submitted CCTV footage as evidence. Despite this, no FIR has been registered; only a non-cognisable (NC) complaint has been filed, and police say the matter is still under investigation.
The accused, Imran Khan, was arrested in December 2024 by the Mumbai Crime Branch Unit 4 with 40 kg of ganja. Since then, he has been lodged in Arthur Road Jail as an undertrial and is regularly produced before the sessions court for hearings. On May 16, he was brought to the court for a scheduled appearance, escorted by armed police constables.
However, after the court appearance, instead of being taken directly back to Arthur Road Jail, Imran allegedly escaped custody. Wearing a mask and riding pillion on a friend’s bike, he reached J.R. Boricha Marg in Saat Rasta, where Matkar’s office is located.

There, he allegedly entered the office and threatened Matkar, saying: “Tu idhar kyun baitha hai? Baithne ka nahi. Nahi to samajh ja” (Why are you sitting here? You are not supposed to be here. Leave, or face the consequences). He then fled the scene. Matkar has claimed that Imran Khan is linked to individuals who attempted to kill him in 2017. He suspects the threat was intended to intimidate him and is possibly connected to past enmity.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the conduct of the escorting police team, especially considering that Imran is a high-risk offender. Matkar’s complaint also alleges that Imran was in possession of a mobile phone — another major violation.
As the issue escalated, Mumbai Police suspended two police constables — Amol Sarkale and Sandeep Suryawanshi — who were responsible for escorting Imran on the day. Sarkale had been posted in the LA unit for over five years, while Suryawanshi had been there for around eight months. A departmental inquiry at the DCP level has been ordered to determine the extent of negligence or any deliberate collusion.
The incident has sparked outrage within political circles and raised troubling questions about the security of high-risk undertrials and the efficiency of escort protocols followed by Mumbai Police.
