Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region is set for a major transformation in east-west connectivity, with tunnelling work on the ambitious Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel project slated to begin soon. Once completed, the project is expected to significantly cut travel time between the two key suburbs, which currently takes 60 to 90 minutes by road.
The 11.84-km-long twin tunnel, touted as India’s longest urban road tunnel, will pass beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Officials said the project will deploy advanced Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) technology to ensure safe, efficient and environmentally sensitive construction with minimal disturbance to the protected forest area.
Leading the tunnelling operation will be “Nayak”, described as India’s largest single-shield hard rock TBM, while a second machine, “Arjuna”, is also set to be launched shortly. Both machines are expected to accelerate excavation work while maintaining precision in challenging geological conditions.
Each of the twin tunnels will have three lanes, including a dedicated emergency lane, along with cross-passages at intervals of 300 metres to enhance safety and evacuation access. The tunnels will also be equipped with modern ventilation systems, firefighting infrastructure, smoke detection mechanisms and LED-based signage for traffic management.

Officials said the project, being implemented by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, will not only reduce travel time but also help decongest existing road networks and lower vehicular emissions by offering a faster alternative route.
Once operational, the tunnel is expected to provide a seamless and efficient commute between Thane and Borivali, marking a major milestone in the region’s infrastructure push. Authorities described the project as a long-term investment aimed at reshaping mobility in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region for the next several decades.
