Mumbai, April 2: Following recent gas leakage and fire incidents at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital (Sion Hospital), the civic administration has initiated a comprehensive safety review across the facility.
The hospital administration has decided to conduct a detailed audit of all electrical equipment and fire safety systems to assess the hospital’s preparedness in handling emergencies.
Recent incidents trigger safety review
According to officials, the first incident occurred on March 24, when a gas leak was reported near Gate No. 1 of the hospital. Preliminary findings suggest the leakage was caused by damage to a gas pipeline during ongoing construction work. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
In a separate incident, a fire broke out in the X-ray department of the hospital’s OPD building. Initial investigations indicate that the blaze was triggered by a blast in an air conditioning unit. No injuries were reported in this case as well. The OPD was also resumed the following day.
Civic authorities step up vigilance
Civic officials stated that these back-to-back incidents have prompted heightened vigilance. “We are exercising extra caution and taking all necessary preventive measures,” an official said.
Past audit revealed safety gaps
Notably, a fire safety audit conducted in 2023 across major civic-run hospitals — including Sion, Nair, and KEM — had revealed several shortcomings.
These included outdated fire extinguishers and the absence of fire alarm systems in some facilities. Notices were issued at the time, directing authorities to address these deficiencies.
Comprehensive audit and upgrades planned
As part of the new measures, the administration will inspect all electrical equipment, review and upgrade fire safety mechanisms, and strengthen safety standards wherever gaps are identified.
Also Watch:
According to senior officials from the hospital, they are taking the incidents seriously and will ensure a thorough audit is conducted. He also noted that a mandatory fire audit is carried out every five years, and compliance will be strictly enforced going forward and ensure the safety of patients, staff, and visitors.
