Mumbai, April 2: Four months after the groundbreaking ceremony, the redevelopment work of Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar has yet to begin, prompting strong criticism from Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde.

Expressing dissatisfaction over the delay, the Mayor has directed officials to ensure that construction of the new building begins within the coming week under any circumstances.

Mayor flags delay in key healthcare project

Rajawadi Hospital, operated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), caters to a large number of patients daily. Highlighting the urgency of the project, the Mayor said that any delay in redevelopment is unacceptable given the increasing patient load.

Details of proposed hospital infrastructure

The first phase of the project involves constructing a modern hospital building with a capacity of approximately 600 beds. The proposed structure will consist of a basement, ground floor, and 10 upper floors, equipped with advanced medical facilities. The building will come up over an area of around 33,179 square metres. The foundation stone for the project was laid in December 2025.

Review visit reveals lack of progress

During a review visit to the hospital on Thursday, the Mayor expressed concern that physical work on the project had not commenced. She instructed officials to secure all pending approvals on a “war footing” and emphasised that obtaining necessary permissions is the responsibility of the contractor.

Phased redevelopment plan outlined

As per the redevelopment plan, once the first phase is completed, all hospital services will be shifted to the new building, after which the second phase of construction will begin.

The Mayor also directed the administration to keep local representatives informed about the project’s progress and to present a detailed update at the BMC headquarters.
