Mumbai: Contractors working on government projects across Maharashtra have issued a legal notice to the state government over long-pending dues amounting to more than Rs 90,000 crore. The contractors, represented by the Maharashtra unit of the Builders' Association of India (BAI), have alleged that non-payment of bills is pushing them to the brink of bankruptcy. A reminder legal notice has been issued again by association advocate named Anand Pandey.

The notice, dated July 2, has been addressed to the Chief Minister, Chief Secretary, Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department, and 26 other departments of the state government.

The BAI claims this is the second legal notice sent to the government; the first went unanswered, prompting the July 2 reminder

According to the association, contractors across various departments have not been paid for months — despite repeated meetings with senior officials to find a resolution..

"Contractors have taken loans from banks to execute these government projects. With no payments coming in, they are now receiving default notices from banks," the association said in a statement. "We urge the government to take immediate action and clear the dues, understanding the financial stress contractors are under."

Ironically, even as these payments remain unsettled, the government is reportedly floating new tenders worth several thousand crores for upcoming projects. If the government fails to respond to the latest notice, contractors say they will have no choice but to pursue the matter in court.
