The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is likely to witness a new mode of transportation as Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced plans to meet Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, to discuss the implementation of a "cable car" project.

Sarnaik emphasised the necessity of aerial transport services, such as cable cars, to reduce the increasing strain on the existing road, rail, and metro networks in the MMR.On January 7, during the "Developed India 2047" conference in New Delhi, chaired by Nitin Gadkari, Sarnaik will represent Maharashtra in a meeting of state transport ministers. He plans to present the proposal for the cable car project through public-private partnerships (PPP) or joint financial collaborations between the central and state governments.

The project requires a detailed survey and the preparation of a Development Plan Report (DPR), which would need approval from Gadkari. During the meeting, Sarnaik intends to highlight the strategic importance of the project for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and explain its potential to address transportation issues in the area.

According to Sarnaik, the increasing population, rising number of vehicles, insufficient road and rail infrastructure, and growing pollution levels in the MMR have made innovative transport solutions essential. Drawing inspiration from successful projects in developed countries, the government aims to leverage modern technology to address these challenges through sustainable solutions like cable cars.Given Mumbai's unique geographical and ecological features, the cable car project aims to enhance connectivity while preserving the environment.

According to a statement issued by Sarnaik's public relations officer on Monday, Sairnaik expressed confidence that the project would significantly improve the region's transport system. The meeting with Gadkari will focus on securing in-principle approval for conducting surveys and developing the DPR, paving the way for implementing the cable car project in Mumbai's metropolitan area.
