Mumbai: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Saturday suspended the food business licence of the Mumbai Cricket Association’s (MCA) facility in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) over alleged food safety and hygiene violations.
Following the FDA’s action, the MCA Club informed its members that all food and beverage services and restaurants at the facility would remain closed with immediate effect until further notice.
In a communication to its members, the MCA Club said, “Dear Associates, this is to inform you that, due to certain technical issues, all Food & Beverage services and restaurants will remain closed with immediate effect until further notice.”
Sports facilities to remain operational
However, the club clarified that its sports facilities would continue to operate, including the gymnasium, swimming pool, lawn tennis courts, squash courts, pickleball courts, badminton courts, table tennis, pool tables and billiards, TOI reported.
The latest action comes amid a wider food safety crackdown by the Maharashtra FDA, with several food outlets and restaurants coming under scrutiny over the past two days.
Several establishments face FDA action
Recent inspections have resulted in the suspension of food business licences at establishments including the Bombay Presidency Radio Club in Colaba, Khar Gymkhana, McDonald’s in Colaba, Novaara in Malad, Status Restaurant at Nariman Point and Bajrang Sweet Mart in Santacruz West.
According to FDA officials, inspections at these establishments uncovered several food safety and hygiene deficiencies, including pest infestation, poor hygiene, cross-contamination risks, improper food storage and inadequate temperature control.
In some cases, officials reportedly found active fly infestations in kitchen areas, a dead cockroach and cockroach traps near utensil-washing sections, raising further concerns over compliance with food safety regulations.
FDA warns against violations
The FDA has directed establishments whose licences have been suspended to immediately cease food-related activities, including the purchase, sale and distribution of food, during the suspension period.
The department has also warned that continuing food business operations without a valid licence could invite stringent action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
