A 29-year-old driver was arrested and booked for allegedly cheating a man of ₹1.60 lakh on the pretext of arranging medicines for Mucormycosis aka Black Fungus in Borivali (W) on Wednesday.

The accused claimed that he can get the medications from his sources, but failed to revert once the transaction was made. He has been accordingly booked under relevant sections for cheating.

The complainant, who was looking for the medication and injection to cure Mucormycosis aka Black Fungus, contracted by his uncle, was asking around to procure the medicines. He came in contact with a man, who was into distributing the medicines of a pharmaceutical company, who further shared a number of a man. When the complainant contacted the accused, identified as Rupesh Mohite, 29, he agreed to provide the injection for black fungus and asked to make an online payment of 50 percent of the charges, which was ₹1,60,000.

In a bid to get the medicines, the complainant wired the money to the accused on May 25, only to be cheated off later. Despite several attempts made to either procure the medicines or get a refund of the money went to no avail, the complainant approached MHB police and lodged a complaint on Wednesday.

Subsequently, police asked the middleman to contact Mohite and meet him at a location, from where he was apprehended and booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for cheating (section 420) and criminal breach of trust (section 406), said an investigating officer.

Police said that he was produced before a local magistrate court on Wednesday and remanded in police custody till June 8. Further probe is underway to determine if Mohite had cheated any other person using the same modus operandi.
