Officials of crime branch unit 9 have arrested a 38-year-old history-sheeter for possession of an illegal weapon and two cartridges of live rounds.

The accused was apprehended acting on a tip-off from the Bandra reclamation area on Thursday evening. He has been remanded in police custody for five days.

According to police sources, a team was informed that a 38-year-old man, who has a number of criminal cases against him, was moving around with an illegal weapon in his tow. Acting on this information, a trap was laid near MTNL Office at Bandra Reclamation area on Thursday. Subsequently, when the accused, Fayyaz Ahmed Qureshi, walked in, police intercepted him.

During the checking, police found a country-made gun and two cartridges of live rounds in his possession. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that Qureshi did not have any licence to possess a weapon and did not give favourable answers when asked for the origin of the weapon.

Qureshi was subsequently arrested and booked under relevant sections of the Arms Act and Maharashtra Police Act. He was produced before a local magistrate court which remanded him in police custody till June 8. A probe revealed that Qureshi was booked for at least nine offences at Bandra police station and have handed over the case to them.
