Mumbai: A fatal road accident on the Eastern Express Highway claimed the life of a senior officer of Gnyandeep Patsanstha after he succumbed to injuries during treatment nearly three weeks after the incident. Based on the complaint filed by an 18-year-old student, the Mumbai Police have registered a case against the driver of a four-wheeler at Vikhroli Police Station.
According to the complaint, Srikant Vijay Shinde (18), a resident of Kalbadevi and a first-year digital marketing student, had accompanied Sunil Shivaji Pisal, a senior officer at Gnyandeep Patsanstha, to attend the institution’s convention at Mulund East on April 29, 2026. Since Shinde’s mother, who also works at the patsanstha, was unwell, he attended the event in her place.
Shinde stated that he and Pisal travelled to Mulund East on his Activa scooter (MH-01-DD-8709) and were returning towards Byculla via the Eastern Express Highway at around 5.30 pm. After crossing the Airoli Bridge descent and proceeding around 20 metres ahead on the south-bound carriageway of the highway, a speeding four-wheeler allegedly rammed into their scooter from the left side.
Due to the impact, both riders fell onto the road. Shinde sustained injuries to both his hands, while Pisal suffered serious head injuries. They were immediately shifted by the driver of the car and local residents to Adi Arogyam Hospital at Kannamwar Nagar in Vikhroli East.
The accused driver allegedly identified himself as Pandurang Balkrishna Sawant, a resident of Andheri, and informed them that the vehicle involved was bearing registration number MH-02-EE-9288. Later, Pisal’s relatives shifted him to Jaslok Hospital at Peddar Road for further treatment. However, during treatment, Pisal succumbed to his injuries on May 20, 2026, at around 2.55 pm.
As the complainant and the deceased’s relatives were occupied with hospital formalities, the complaint was lodged later with the police. Based on the complaint, the Mumbai Police registered an FIR against the accused driver for allegedly driving rashly and negligently, causing injuries to Shinde and the death of Sunil Shivaji Pisal. Further investigation is underway.
