Mumbai: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials have arrested four female members of a Kenyan gold smuggling syndicate for allegedly smuggling 5185 grams of gold valued at Rs 4.14 crores, concealed in the garments worn by them underneath their burqas. The arrested women have been identified as Dido Aliya Mascud, Farah Fatuma Abdu, Ismail Istahil Mohamud and Sheikh Banazir Abdi.
According to the DRI sources, based on specific intelligence that female members of a Kenyan gold smuggling syndicate would attempt to smuggle gold into India from Nairobi, 4 female passengers travelling on the same PNR and arriving from Nairobi to Mumbai on Thursday were intercepted by officers of DRI Mumbai.
A personal search of the intercepted passengers resulted in the recovery of 5185 grams of gold valued at Rs 4.14 crores, concealed in the garments worn by them underneath their burqas.
"The gold concealed in the garments beneath the burqas worn by the passengers were being attempted to be smuggled in a clandestine manner as the said gold was not declared before the Indian Customs authorities by them. We are probing about the supplier and receiver of the said gold," said a DRI official, adding that the recovered gold was seized and the four passengers were arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act.
