Mumbai: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials have arrested three Ugandan nationals for allegedly smuggling cocaine worth Rs 21.96 crore. The accused had ingested capsules containing Cocaine. The 3 passengers purged 170 capsules containing 2197 grams of cocaine.
Specific intelligence was gathered by DRI, Mumbai which indicated that three (03) passengers - Aziz Nsubuga (31), Godfrey Brian Batte (25) and Sula Bagala (34) all belonging to Republic of Uganda National, travelling from Entebbe to Mumbai would land on 23.01.2025 at the CSMI Airport, Mumbai and that the said passengers had concealed some narcotics substance with them. Acting on the said intelligence, the officers of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Mumbai Zonal Unit, intercepted the said passengers on their arrival.
The trio admitted having ingested some capsules containing drugs in their stomach in Uganda. All the three accused were produced before a local court on 23.01.2025 for seeking permission for conducting their medical examination at Sir JJ Hospital.
On 27.01.2025, Aziz Nsubuga, Godfrey Brian Batte and Sula Bagala were discharged from the hospital and it was informed by doctors that a total of 63 capsules were excreted by Aziz Nsubuga, 37 capsules were excreted by Godfrey Brian Batte and 70 capsules were excreted by Sula Bagala during their stay at hospital from 23.01.2025 to 27.01.2025. All the capsules excreted by the three accused were handed over to DRI officer on 27.01.2025. On testing the material in the capsules tested positive for Cocaine.
"Aziz Nsubuga has revealed that he has successfully smuggled drugs in the past in India and that he was getting handsome amount of quick and easy money to smuggle drugs. Further probe is on to ascertain who had supplied drugs to them and who was supposed to receive the said consignment in Mumbai," said a DRI source.
