In a significant push towards bolstering passenger safety and streamlining rail security, the Mumbai Division of Central Railway witnessed the formal inauguration of two new Government Railway Police (GRP) stations at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) and Asangaon on Independence Day, August 15.
The move is part of a broader initiative to strengthen security infrastructure across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). According to M.K. Kalasagar, Commissioner of Government Railway Police, Mumbai, with these additions, the total number of GRP stations under the Mumbai Government Railway Police Commissionerate has increased from 17 to 19.
Enhanced Security at LTT and Asangaon
LTT, a key terminal under Central Railway handling nearly 30 pairs (including weekly and special trains) of long-distance trains daily, will now benefit from a dedicated GRP presence. Officials say the new station is expected to significantly improve crime prevention and ensure better coordination during emergencies, given the terminal's increasing footfall and train movement.
Asangaon, a critical suburban station where multiple local services originate and terminate, has also been brought under the ambit of a full-fledged GRP station. With average daily ticket sales exceeding 15,000 and daily earnings crossing Rs 1.5 lakh, authorities had long identified the need for enhanced policing at the station due to growing commuter traffic.
Both stations were part of a March 2025 decision by the Maharashtra government to establish four new GRP stations in the region. Apart from LTT and Asangaon, the approved list included Bhayandar and Ambernath, where stations are expected to be operational soon.
Upgraded Facilities at Dadar and Panvel
In addition to the new stations, existing GRP infrastructure at Dadar and Panvel is being modernized. At Dadar, the GRP office currently located on platform 9A — a structure that constricts the already crowded platform — will be relocated to a newly constructed office above the station manager’s premises. The move aims to ease congestion and facilitate platform expansion.
Meanwhile, the GRP station at Panvel has been shifted to a newly built facility within the station premises. Officials confirmed that the new building is complete and scheduled for formal inauguration on Friday.

Focus on Passenger Security
Railway and police officials say these developments are part of a sustained effort to improve commuter experience by enhancing security presence, easing platform congestion, and upgrading amenities.
“These GRP stations are not just about infrastructure; they represent our commitment to ensuring safety, better crowd management, and quick response to incidents on railway premises,” a senior GRP official said.
