Mumbai: A 21-year-old woman was allegedly molested by an off-duty conductor aboard a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus late Tuesday night, sparking outrage among passengers and raising serious concerns about safety on public transport.
The incident took place on an MSRTC bus (MH 13 CU 8594) traveling from Mumbai Central to Maloshi. The accused, identified as Vikas Valmik Munde, a non-duty conductor, reportedly boarded the bus while under the influence of alcohol. As the bus reached Maitri Park in Chembur around 8:30 pm, Munde allegedly grabbed the woman's hand and made obscene gestures while she was seated near the front.
According to sources, victim raised an alarm, drawing the attention of other passengers. Before any action could be taken, accused Munde fled the vehicle at a nearby traffic signal. In the ensuing chaos, angry passengers confronted and physically assaulted the on-duty conductor, Manesh Tayde, blaming him for allowing Munde to escape.
The Govandi police initially registered a case and later transferred the matter to the Bhoiwada police station for further investigation. Authorities have confirmed that Munde has been suspended from duty by MSRTC, which has launched its own inquiry into the matter.
"Though Munde was not on duty during the incident, his behavior is unacceptable and a breach of public trust," said an MSRTC spokesperson. "We are cooperating fully with the police to ensure appropriate action is taken."
The incident has triggered renewed calls for tighter safety protocols and surveillance on public transport systems. Police investigations are ongoing, and efforts are being made to trace and apprehend Munde.
